This Second Empire building served as Portsmouth's city hall and fire department headquarters during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Before its conversion to an office building, large openings on the ground level contained the storage bays for fire engines. Segmental-arched windows on the upper levels identified the office portion of the building. The mansard roof with clock tower now seems fussy in comparison to the stripped classical appearance of the limestone facade.
