The Berkeley Hotel, across the street from the Tobacco Company, is a good example of infill architecture. With elements like the Berkeley's simple tower and understated entrance, architects and planners have enhanced the lively streetscape and skyline of the Slip without detracting from the historic character. The varying heights of the cornices and storefronts of the 1200 and 1300 blocks of East Cary Street articulate the slope of the street and create a staccato visual rhythm. With one exception, these buildings were rebuilt within about eleven years of the 1865 fire.
