Some of the original rural isolation of the area can be grasped from Beechwood, one of the best surviving plantation houses in Chesapeake. Built by William Charles Stewart and his wife Catherine, the I-house has two rear singlestory projecting wings, creating a U-type plan. The minimal exterior details are Italianate, while the interior has Greek Revival features.
