Snake Creek was at one time a minor crossroads community, with the typical country store and schoolhouse in proximity to the home of the area's principal farming family. The large frame two-story farmhouse was built by farmer James F. Martin shortly after he acquired the surrounding farmland in 1910. The house combines a traditional center-passage plan with a complex roof, projecting polygonal bays, and a wraparound porch. On the grounds is a two-room school-house (before 1907) where Martin's second wife, Nettie, taught until 1955.
