Mehner of Fond du Lac designed this courthouse in a somewhat simple expression of Beaux-Arts classicism, popular for civic buildings in the early twentieth century. The building resembles Taylor County’s courthouse, another of his designs. Much of this courthouse’s drama derives from contrasting colors of red brick and white limestone. The building’s imposing massing heralds the importance of the governmental activities within. A projecting central pavilion with Ionic brick pilasters dominates the facade, which is spanned by a limestone ground floor and entablature. A low dome crowns the composition. Alterations include interior remodeling, an addition set back from the original building, and dark aluminum window sashes replacing the old frames.
