Honoring a famous Wisconsin aviator is the Richard I. Bong Heritage Center, with an arched, brushed aluminum exterior that evokes an airplane hangar. Inside, arched trusses span the exhibit space, and upper-level windows fill its arches, lighting the central hall where exhibits and Bong’s memorabilia are displayed. Bong, from nearby Poplar, was an ace pilot in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He died in August 1945, just before the war ended, while testing a new plane for the Army Air Corps.
