Alois and Nina Fix hired Bentley after seeing a house he had created two years earlier for Edward Bartl (see LC4) and after hearing, incorrectly, that Bentley had studied under Frank Lloyd Wright. Bentley applied Prairie Style features to a basic foursquare house, including brick piers at the corners, which stop just below second-story windows that turn at the building’s corners, an angular staircase projecting from a side wall, and a broad, low chimney in the center of the hipped roof.

Nearby is one of Claude and Starck’s Prairie Style public libraries (1917; 716 Superior Avenue). This small brick library has a terra-cotta frieze, reminiscent of Louis Sullivan’s organic designs, and a green tile roof. An addition was completed in 1980.
