One of downtown Clarksburg's most recent structures is a contextual building that tries not to brag too much about itself. Its red brick recalls the City National Bank across 3rd Street; its careful proportions and rhythm relate to the former Union National Bank across Main Street; its updated Art Moderne touches and vertical fenestration recall the courthouse diagonally across the intersection. This is altogether quite an accomplishment, but one wishes that the architects had not bothered with the underscaled cupola on top of the hipped roof. It relates to nothing, not even to the building it surmounts. HLM (Hansen Lind Meyer), an architecture firm with offices nationwide, specializes in “justice architecture” such as courthouses and detention facilities.
