Lemley–Wood–Sayre House

1871–1872. 301 Walnut St. (northeast corner of Walnut and Virginia sts.)

Elevated on a knoll, this Italianate house, almost an Italian villa in form, exemplifies the Tuscan mode with plain masonry walls, gently segmented window heads, broad eaves, and shallow hipped roofs. Two decorative wooden porches and a polygonal bay, all capped with ornately railed decks, contrast effectively with the unadorned walls. Two outbuildings contemporary with the house—a one-story servant quarters–carriage house and a small springhouse—stand in the rear yard.
