This 3,800-acre gated enclave is being developed by a subsidiary of the Caperton family's Slab Fork Coal Company. Houses can be traditional or contemporary and can be faced with brick, stone, or cypress, or a combination of materials. Houses face gently graded roads that wind around two golf courses and several lakes and ponds. North Carolina architect Archie Royal Davis designed the main clubhouse, an impressive brick structure with Georgian design precedents and a definite “Gone with the Wind” ambience. Glade Springs also has a conference center, rental villas, tennis courts, swimming pool, and a motorized horse exercising machine. The carefully detailed Georgian Revival gatehouse on U.S. 19 gives a hint of what lies within.
