Coal Company Church

-A A +A

Originally a Baptist church in the Raleigh County mining community of Pemberton, several miles south of Beckley, this small chapel was moved to the grounds of the exhibition mine and restored in 1997. The simple frame building has a projecting tower sheltering a front entrance, which is approached by a long flight of steps. Typical of the churches that coal companies once built for their employees, it is unpretentious, sturdy, and inviting. Rooflines of the church, tower, and canopy over the door all slope at the same angle, providing a nice symmetry.
