Southwest of the courthouse, vehicular traffic on Ballengee Street turns ninety degrees onto Park Avenue. Ballengee's right-of-way then continues a half block southwest as a greensward planted with grass and trees, ending at the crest of a bluff overlooking the New River. Seven houses, built at the turn of the twentieth century, line the right-of-way and are accessible only via sidewalks. Whether Queen Anne or American Foursquare, all are a bit grander than the Hinton norm. Though literally a stone's throw from the courthouse, this pleasant and private residential enclave could serve as a model worth emulating in other cities.
