Flagler (1888, 4,931 feet) was named for Henry M. Flagler, a railroad tycoon who also made fortunes as a Standard Oil executive and as a developer of Florida resorts, in the vain hope that he would invest here. The Rock Island's rails followed prairie trails into this town, where a wooden water tower and pumphouse were the first constructions.
