Naturita (1882, 5,431 feet) was formerly named Chipeta for the wife of Chief Ouray. Between 1898 and 1928, ores taken from this region accounted for half the world's supply of radium. The U.S. Vanadium Company mill processed both uranium and vanadium. The town's hot history is exhibited at the Naturita Schoolhouse Museum.
