Mililani is a 3.9-square-mile master-planned community with a population of 28,608 in 2000. Located near the center of Oahu, it sits on former plantation lands owned by Castle and Cooke, who began planning this residential area in the early 1960s. The first dwellings were sold in 1968. The opening of the H-2 interstate highway in 1976 greatly reduced travel time between this bedroom community and Honolulu, and led to further expansion. Now fully developed, the community numbers more than sixteen thousand dwelling units.
