Hawi and Kapaau are over the Kohala Mountains from Waimea by way of County Highway 250. Former sugar towns, they are characterized by the wood frame, false front, vernacular buildings that line the highway. Following Kohala Sugar Company's closure in the 1970s, both towns went into decline; however, recently they have been revitalized thanks to the visitors who daily pass through on their way to Pololu Lookout. Halawa lies to the east of Kapaau immediately after the Halawa stream.
