In 1904, when Louis “Leo” H. Marrero organized the Marrero Land and Improvement Association to develop the town, it was known as Amesville. In 1914, the town was renamed to honor Marrero, who at one time served concurrently as president of the Jefferson Parish Police Jury and as state senator, and later as sheriff of Jefferson Parish.
