The eastward course of PA 940 from Blakeslee to PA 191 passes many of the resorts that have begun to transform the Poconos into a contemporary vacationland. Just to the south off PA 314 is Pocono Manor with its early-twentieth-century Arts and Crafts inn and golf club by Philadelphian Walter Smedley (1902 and later). Round river rocks mounded into walls, perhaps recalling H. H. Richardson's 1885 Ames Gate Lodge in North Easton, Massachusetts, or Adirondack camps, typify the response of old elites to the mountain setting. Other buildings along PA 940 are more assertively modern with references to western ski resorts while some are typical of the more crass Pocono resorts.
