Located at the intersection of several U.S. highways—successors to old stage-coach routes—Hillsville is the county's most populous town. Following a major downtown fire in 1931, much of the commercial downtown, especially along the west side of Main Street, was rebuilt with one- to three-story buildings, mostly of brick construction. The completion in the 1970s of I-77 two miles to the west of Hillsville drew commercial development to the interchange at Carrollton Pike.
