Glen Jean, a former coal mining center and railroad junction, was named after the wife of its founder and leading citizen, T. G. McKell. During its boom years, it had an opera house, designed by architect Frank L. Packard, of Columbus, Ohio, and a company store identical to the one still standing at Whipple ( FY21). Glen Jean now serves as headquarters of the New River Gorge National River and as an access point to Thurmond.
