This remote valley town (1854, 9,200 feet) was named for St. Francis of Assisi. The 1854 plaza is gone, but venerable adobe buildings survive. The church is one of the county's newest, a replacement for a much older structure that stood next door. The stuccoed cinderblock building has large, steel-framed, clear glass windows and a likeness of St. Francis of Assisi in the rose window of the main bell tower and entry. A glass block cross lights the stairwell of the bell tower on the southwest corner.
