Founded in Denver in 1901, the Woodmen became a leading African American fraternal, charitable, and insurance society with a national membership and branches in other cities. Their headquarters is a late example of Streamline Moderne uncluttered by additions and sheathed in snowy terracotta. Across the street, at 2123 Downing Street, is the eclectic Victorian Ferril House (1889, Franklin Goodnow), home of Thomas Hornsby Ferril, Colorado's foremost poet.
