The Dutch architect gave this five-story buff brick structure exotic window shapes and vibrant dark green terracotta trim in patterns reminiscent of Art Nouveau. Raised parapets at the corners of this flat-roofed structure are treated as towers. French doors form fourth-floor windows, and the entrances are set into Gothic arches at midlevel between the basement and the first floor. The YMCA, the second occupant of the building, altered the interior, but some of the original has survived, including an operational 1913 birdcage elevator and fragments of wood-work. Since the YMCA moved out, a two-story gymnasium has been converted to two levels of offices around a skylit atrium. In the basement pub the large blocks of sandstone used for the foundation are visible, as are the walled-in brick arches of basement door and window openings.
