Founded as the Colorado State Normal School, WSC took its current name in 1923 when it was promoted to a liberal arts college. This state school has a steady enrollment of around 2,500 on a campus on the northeast side of Gunnison. The Clarence T. Hurst Science Hall (1962) houses the Hurst Museum, with exhibits, artifacts, and data on the college and the town.
