Fisher-Zugelder House and Smith Cottage

Stonemason Frederick Zugelder used local beige sandstone with dressed edges for this two-story, L-plan house and matching cottage on an ample corner lot. Both buildings incorporate European revival forms in vernacular interpretations. The exterior walls are double, with an air space for insulation. Even coursing on the most visible walls gives way to random courses on the north side and even to some rubble fieldstone in an upper gable end. Zugelder discovered, owned, and operated the Aberdeen Quarry, seven miles south of town on South Beaver Creek, which provided 280,000 cubic feet of granite for the Colorado State Capitol.
