Forest Queen Hotel

1890. 129 Elk Ave. (northwest corner of 2nd St.)

This two-story frame building beside Coal Creek has a false front with a cornice supported by carved brackets and a paneled frieze. A four-bay storefront has a separate entrance for the hotel on the right and a recessed entry between large glazed bays, now enclosed for a vestibule. Wooden corner pilasters above echo the pilasters dividing the first-floor bays. Little altered since the 1880s, when it served as a general store, the Forest Queen was a bar and brothel before its reformation as a hotel and restaurant. Interior highlights include a high wooden ceiling and an antique safe and back bar.
