Isaac Kaufman House

-A A +A
1893, remodeling, Charles Meade, Jr. 634 G St. SE

In 1893 Isaac Kaufman hired mechanic Charles Meade, Jr., to reface his house at a cost of $4,000. The result is a successful mixture of Richardsonian and Queen Anne elements, with rock-faced limestone used for the basement and first floor, red brick with limestone details for the second, and a slate mansard roof with pressed metal dormer windows in the attic. Unusually fine Richardsonian ornament serves as a continuous capital-cum-frieze for a series of slender colonnettes that enframe the arched door and bay window at the ground level.
