The interpretation of the Gothic here seems to be composed of three or more layers piled on one another. This layered effect, emphasized by horizontal stone banding placed in the brick walls, is countered by the verticality of the numerous windows and recessed panels. Next door, at 516 Ninth Avenue South, is the rectory, designed by Josiah L. Rice in 1896. Its image is that of the Queen Anne style, with a few Richardsonian Romanesque elements touched in.
