This institution is credited (in error) as being the “first college west of the Mississippi.” Originally named Mount Pleasant Collegiate Institute, it became Iowa Wesleyan University in 1849, and in 1911 it assumed its present name. The sparse number of buildings and their low scale means that it is the parklike quality of the 25-acre site which dominates.
