The 1858 church was constructed under the direction of Father J. G. Reffe, who may also have been its designer. An extensive remodeling of 1903 was accomplished by Father W. Jacoby. The tall, narrow entrance tower implies the medieval, but the church really turns out to be English Baroque. Surmounting the brick portion of the tower is an octagon surrounded by four large consoles; above these are lunette dormers. The space over the crossing bursts forth with a high drum surrounded by columns. The culmination of all of this is a dome with eight lunette dormers.
