Old Main, Wartburg Teachers' Seminary (now Wartburg College)

Wartburg College was founded in 1878, and its first building was constructed two years later. The three-story brick Old Main is an Italianate design that has been somewhat updated with references to the Eastlake. Instead of a bracketed, broadly overhanging hipped roof, it has a classical entablature and cornice with dentils. There is a deeply recessed entrance door with a high curved transom behind a small entry porch with four Italianate piers. Other than the changes in the entrance door and steps, and the addition of a metal fire escape, the exterior of the building remains basically intact.
