This is one of the oldest houses in Havre de Grace, and its French Colonial characteristics reflect the heritage of its original owner, John Baptist Averilhe. Its square configuration with a slightly flared hipped roof and stucco-over-brick finish make it unique among the town’s residential buildings. A central chimney provides a fireplace in each room of the side-hall plan house. Averilhe moved to Havre de Grace from Charleston, South Carolina. Indebted by the cost of construction, he was forced to sell the house in 1805. It was purchased in 1816 by wealthy merchant, town commissioner, and treasurer Howes Goldsborough and remained in his family until 1855.
