The compact intricacy of this seven-level house won it the grand prize for residential architecture in the Paris Exposition of 1936. The concrete blocks, called unit blocks, were manufactured by Whitman's company. An interplay of high and low spaces on the inside is matched by the composition of the block walls, plaster planes, and window bands on the outside. This cubic complement to the free extension of Dow's own home and studio ( MD2.3), the Whitman house similarly reflects the architect's adaptation of Wrightian influence.
