Known as The Castle, this Richardsonian Romanesque house was built for John W. Thomson (b. 1817), an agent for the Lake Superior Transit Company and numerous other steamboat lines, and Port Huron's Deputy Collector of Customs during President Lincoln's administration. The house is constructed of randomly coursed, rough-faced, yellowish-brown Berea sandstone. It has a massive, three-story, conical-roofed corner tower with an open third-floor porch that affords a view of the busy ship traffic on the St. Clair River.
