Although this version of the Italianate, taken directly from Samuel Sloan's pattern books, was popular, it is unusual to find two examples of it on the main street, especially one of wood and one of brick. The three-story brick version, with paired brackets, round-arched windows, and a glazed belvedere, was built soon after the Civil War by William McCracken as a performance space. The third floor's elongated windows indicate the site of the auditorium. Nearby, at 301 Main Street, the two-story frame house built for Alexander L. Gordon in 1881 has brackets and a belvedere cupola nearly identical to its brick cousin's.
