After World War II, Roman Catholics were the largest religious denomination in the state. They continued their nineteenth-century hierarchical model of large parishes that guaranteed monumentality to their buildings. As a result, the largest church of Levittown is St. Michael's with its echoes of Le Corbusier in its immense roof and its gigantic stained glass window that fills the west wall facing the central parkway. The complex began with a rectory, convent, and school by Nolen and Swinburn in 1954. From these seeds grew the parish.
