Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary (Polish) Roman Catholic Church
McGlynn, a favorite of the anthracite region's ethnic Catholics, was relentless in piling on the ornament when he had the opportunity, as with this massive brick “Polish Baroque” church, whose twin open spires rise above Scranton's South Side. Ionic and Corinthian columns, blind arches, pedimented niches, quoins, and stone garlands are all combined in a wedding cake of a building that summarizes the ambition and pride of a parish whose members were still in the first stages of the grinding climb upward toward the middle class.
