Rudolf Ellis House

-A A +A
1873, Furness and Hewitt. 2113 Spruce St.

For a fellow captain in the Sixth Pennsylvania Cavalry, Frank Furness enlivened a preexisting house with a dynamically asymmetrical facade and exceptional floral ornament (unfortunately, most of its linear incision has since been infilled with cement). Tough and imaginative, it is one of Furness's first mature works and is the closest remaining example of the work that attracted Louis Sullivan to Furness's office. Around the corner at 266 S. 21st Street is one of several contemporary houses in the neighborhood with similar abstracted floral ornament that are probably also by Furness.
