Margaret Potter Cottage (The Red House)

The relatively severe planarity of the Potter cottage could be read as early modern if not for the hipped roofline and the revival surround of the main doorway, all but hidden by the shadowy undercut porches (some now walled in), which nearly surround the first story and float the upper stories over shaded voids. Only on the rear is the most obvious revival detail of a second-story Palladian window coyly apparent. Withers also worked on the Marion Davis Cottage (1898–1899), 40 Emerson Road.
