The forceful presence of this Greek Revival house depends on the reinforcement of its contained cubic quality by a hipped roof rising to a full monitor from which jut flanking chimneys. Plain corner piers, cornices, and a Doric entrance porch emphasize the severity. By way of playful contrast, the ornamentation of the Gothic Revival porch added to one side of the house subtly rounds the customary angularity of the roof bracing with complementary handlelike, semicircular elements halfway up the post supports. A pretty Gothic Revival wellhead near the rear kitchen ell must date from the same time.
