Similar to Kingsville and Sarita, the political status of Falfurrias was elevated only after the founding of the county, thus requiring the insertion of the new courthouse in one of the four blocks originally platted as a city park. The Beaux-Arts, H-plan, buff brick and terra-cotta building is set on a podium with a monumental order and a two-story colonnade along its front elevation. Its massing is more compact than Live Oak County Courthouse in nearby George West ( CJ20), another Giles design executed in red brick with a monumental colonnade. Ironically, the completion of the courthouse in Falfurrias was delayed while the southern half of the county successfully petitioned the Texas legislature in 1913 to create Jim Hogg County in order to break away from Lasater's undue political and economic influence. The courthouse was restored in 2008 by Mark Whitmore with funding from the Texas Historic Courthouse Preservation Program.
