This imposing house is the only work in Texas by noted Santa Barbara, California, architect and master of Spanish Colonial Revival George Washington Smith. The exterior of the house is characteristic of Smith's work, being largely rectilinear in form, with little of the fussy exterior decoration often found with this style. From the street the house's courtyard plan is apparent, with the entrance door set in an otherwise blank wall. The large windows and balconies indicate that the rooms on the second floor were designed to benefit from natural ventilation.
