New York City architect Richard Upjohn, one of the founders of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) in 1857, established Gothic Revival as the most suitable style for Episcopal churches. Although now significantly enlarged, Upjohn's original core of this church is the only example of his work in Texas. St. James Episcopal Church ( PF34) in La Grange is attributed to his son, Richard M. Upjohn. The exterior's massive limestone walls and the large bell cote marking the southwest corner contrast sharply with the light timber framing on the interior. The ceiling of the apse is painted deep blue with gilt stars, conveying a sense of the infinite behind the altar.
