Palestine Missionary Baptist Church

This Missionary Baptist congregation was organized in 1868 by a group of emancipated slaves. Faced with dark red brick and trimmed with limestone, the church reproduces the late-nineteenth-century Protestant spatial arrangement of a worship space elevated above an undercroft containing ancillary rooms, which occasions an impressive front stair. The narthex of this streamlined neo-Gothic church is spatially distinguished from the nave behind by its separate roof and bell cote. At 702 E. Convent Avenue is the former Victoria Colored High School of 1901 by Jules Leffland.
