Organized by emancipated slaves, the congregation of Webster Chapel United Methodist Church built its permanent church building here in 1889, a classic Southern vernacular church house with pointed-arched openings and a Gothic tower and spire. Although the clapboard exterior was refaced with brick in 1951, the church retains its essential architectural features minus the tower's spire and most of its original detail.
