Charles L. Hewitt House

-A A +A
c. 1854, 1875, 1909. 408 W. Forrest Ave.

The Hewitt House is one-third of a structure built south of Market Square by a German social club, the Teutonia Verein, as its clubhouse, Casino Hall. In 1875 the building was dismantled and reconstructed on S. Bridge Street by another German social club. In 1909 it was divided in three and moved again, this portion being the only survivor. The building's exterior appearance is so conservative that it could be mistaken for a house of the 1850s were it not for its immense scale, best appreciated from the side, gable-ended elevation.
