The 48,114-seat stadium houses the American League Texas Rangers baseball team. The architectural design and detailing of the stadium references such historic baseball precedents as Fenway Park, Comiskey Park, Ebbets Field, and others of the “Jewel Box” period of steel and brick stadiums. An invited architectural competition in 1991 involved seventeen firms, including Texan architects Gary Cunningham and Lake|Flato in addition to Michael Graves, Charles Moore, Antoine Predock, and Ellerbe Becket.
The concept of the Schwarz design was to re-create the intimacy of the early parks. Red brick and Texas sunset red granite sheath the exterior facades, which rise 114 feet from the ground to the top of the metal roof. A 70-foot-tall Main Concourse at the perimeter provides access to the ballpark from all sides. Its arcaded apertures are the defining visual element of the stadium. The park includes an asymmetrical playing field, a four-story office building at center field, and other sports-related amenities such as the Texas Rangers Hall of Fame.
