This typical three-story, red brick electrical switching station with minimal classical trim was adapted for a residence without losing any of the muscularity of its industrial origin. The interior was opened up to expose the steel framework, and new exposed ductwork and an exterior steel-framed exit stair maintain the industrial vocabulary. Even the rolling chain hoist is still in place. A colossal pivoting steel mesh gate opens through the tall brick enclosing walls of the old transformer yard to the motor court, shaded by an old oak, and a landscaped urban courtyard (2009, Hocker Design Group). The work of Dallas architect Gary Cunningham is known for its integrity of materials and sensitivity to site.
