Rulfs designed seven buildings for John P. Davidson, and this was the architect’s last commission, completed after his death in 1926. Responding to the housing demand for the recently inaugurated Stephen F. Austin State Teachers College, Davidson planned an apartment building with Rulfs c. 1924 that was not constructed for several years until he acquired adequate property. The two-story red brick structure forms a U-plan around a narrow inner court. The flat roofs with false hips and broad, bracketed eaves convey a Prairie School character, while the street and court entrances are highlighted by curved parapets, a feature often used by Rulfs, as is the triple-arched motif of the courtyard’s gallery. Named for Davidson’s wife, the apartments catered to single women who worked downtown.
