The former hotel, initially only two stories in height, provided accommodations and services for business travelers. As well as a dining room, the hotel included a “sample room,” where salespeople could display their wares. The ground floor has an unusual three-arched loggia, with the entrance recessed from the sidewalk. The two-story Hardeman Building (1904, Diedrich Rulfs) next door was incorporated into the hotel facilities. The sidewalk canopy is a replica of the original that ran along the entire expanded hotel block front.
Diagonally opposite at 401 E. Main is another Rulfs design. Although the ground floor is altered, the second-floor windows and parapet of the M. G. Hazle Building (1901) feature some of his typical brickwork in contrasting tones of tawny and red brick.
